We took a two-day loop sidetrip from Yellowstone to explore the Wyoming countryside. From the park's east entrance we drove to Cody, WY via the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway, enjoying the classic Old West scenery. The moon was full the night we stayed at Cody Cowboy Village.
Next to the motel is Old Trail Town, which sounds hokey but is well worth a visit. The owner moved frontier-era buildings onto one dusty street and filled them with memorabilia from the Old West.
We continued north on the Chief Joseph Highway, stopping at the summit overlooking the canyon where Chief Joseph and his band of Nez Perce Indians surrendered after three months of fleeing and fighting the US Army unit intent on relocating them to a reservation.
The Beartooth Highway returned us to the northeast entrance of Yellowstone.
