Inland and into Tuscany
— Pisa

Pisa's "Field of Miracles" (Campo dei Miracoli) includes its famous Leaning Tower, of course, flanking its Baptistry and Cathedral. The structures were built when Pisa was one of the world's most cosmopolitan urban centers, boasting a population of 300,000. The city's fortunes were dashed first by Genoa, which devastated the Pisan navy in 1284 — and then by silt in the Arno River, which eventually cost too much to keep dredging.
